A few days ago, an obituary was released saying that Comrade Wang Minqing, the former head of the office of the Central Health Care Commission (the former director of the Central Health Care Bureau), died in Beijing on August 19, 2024 at the age of 95 due to illness. Mr. Wang Minqing is my dear friend and a role model for me, and I respectfully call him “Wang Lao”. Due to my own busy schedule, I was unable to pay attention to the obituary in time. It was after the funeral that I learned that Mr. Wang had passed away.

Mr. Wang Minqing was the son of Wang Shiying, head of the Central Special Branch and deputy chief of staff of the Eighth Route Army. Born in 1929, he joined the revolution at the age of 12 as a “child soldier” and joined the Communist Party of China at the age of 17. Since then, he has served as a doctor at the First Field Hospital of the North China Military Region, a doctor at the Army General Hospital of the North China Military Region, deputy director and director of the office of the Central Health Care Committee, and director of the Central Health Care Bureau. Wang's father, Wang Shiying, had long worked in the Central Special Branch, once served as deputy chief of staff of the Eighth Route Army, and after liberation served as secretary of the Shanxi Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and as a full-time member of the Central Supervisory Commission.

About sixteen years ago, when I was Chairman of the International Seven-Three Society in Australia. Once when I returned to China, I wrote a letter to Comrade Liu Qi, the then Secretary of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee, in order to help a little girl of the “Red Descendants” to solve the problem of household registration in Beijing. Since this little girl's grandfather was also a former revolutionary, and since he and Wang's father, Wang Shiying, worked together in the Central Special Branch, I asked Wang to sign my letter. After the little girl's household registration problem was solved, I made a special trip to visit Wang.

Like Mr. Gao Zhanxiang, Mr. Wang praised me as the best “Bi Gan Zi(writer)” they had seen in half a century. This praise really puts me to shame, but such encouragement fills me with confidence to move forward. From then on, I had frequent dealings with Mr. Wang and visited him every time I returned to China. Every time we met, he gave me a medical checkup, such as listening to my heartbeat and measuring my blood pressure. I joked with him, “You are the one who provides health care services to the central leaders, how can I, an ordinary person, trouble you!”

After a long time of contact, Mr. Wang and I agreed to do something together. We founded the Beijing Shengpei Qing Medical Research Institute, and the word “Qing” in the name of the Institute is derived from the name of Mr. Wang Minqing . In the name of this Institute , we have organized the Wanshou Forum, published medical research books, and so on. Mr. Wang was often concerned that we had no funds for our work overseas, and he strongly supported some of my business ideas. For example, he supported the Junfu Science and Technology Research Institute to establish Guizhou Junfu Wine Co. He has also participated in the tasting of Junfu wines on several occasions, offering valuable advice.

Since the 2019-nCoV outbreak, it has been difficult for the people to discern the truth of many of the issues, and they have basically become virus-phobic. I'm also worried about the possibility that I might come back from abroad and spread an unknown virus to some old-timers who are old and frail and whose resistance is not what it used to be. For Mr. Wang, who is already a national treasure in his nineties, I basically don't dare to visit him at home anymore, and usually greet him by phone and WeChat. But the inner feelings for this dear friend have not faded at all, but have grown even deeper.

As a matter of fact, on the day of Wang's death, I had already returned China from abroad, and in my capacity as Chairman of the Southern Silk Road Chamber of Commerce of the SSCO, I had traveled to Fujian Province, the cultural region of the Maritime Silk Road, to conduct research. Unfortunately, a friend sent me the obituary via WeChat and I didn't pay attention to the WeChat. How sorry and saddened I am that I could not return to Beijing to attend the funeral. Wang's past is fresh in my mind, Wang's face is in front of my eyes, Wang's voice surrounds my ears, and I am writing this article in memory of my beloved friend Mr. Wang Minqing.
